In today’s fast-paced and materialistic society, elderly people often become invisible citizens. The old and forgotten are found both in rural areas and in noisy cities. A large number of these individuals spend their later years in deep loneliness, with the belief that their duty is to quietly pass away as quickly as possible. Many do not dare to burden others with their problems, and modesty becomes their everyday motto.
In Latvia, the often limited pensions of the elderly frequently lead them into difficult situations where they must seek assistance. People approaching retirement age also struggle, with deteriorating health making it hard to find work. Many have families and children who could help, but often the children themselves are unable to provide the necessary support for their aging, ill parents or those in critical situations. The most difficult situations are faced by elderly individuals who are alone, with no children or relatives who are able or willing to assist.
Many have lived through war and carried the heavy burden of post-war years, and today they feel shame and humiliation when they have to ask for help to buy medicine, firewood, or pay for dental prostheses. Difficult situations arise when surgeries are needed, but the waiting time for state-funded procedures is too long, and for the elderly, every day without pain or the ability to care for themselves matters. Especially challenging are cases where illness has rendered an individual helpless and unable to care for themselves.
In such and similar situations, the support and care of others is crucial, and this is something we can all provide together!
