There are moments when the impossible becomes possible and miracles occur!
It was five years ago when, on a sunny May afternoon, we came together to create Goodness Day. Ever since then, we have thought good thoughts and done good things to help 204 children all over Latvia. We have helped them to hear, to see, to walk and to live. It is a day which has become a celebration of kindness for us all.
Thank you to all of the good and responsive people who did not sink into apathy and instead made donations to help children and their parents to pursue the dream of getting better.
On Goodness Day 2011, there are once again children who require or need. If Aleksandrs (5 y.o.) is to hear, Timofejs (3 y.o.) is to see, Elīna (16 y.o.) is to walk, and Ernests (3 y.o.) is to survive, we need LVL 27,755.15. Let’s donate this money on Goodness Day on May 29!
Elīna (16)
16-year-old Elīna will finish the 9th grade this year. When she was born, doctors diagnosed her with scoliosis. This is a progressive disease, and the young woman’s legs have become deformed. She urgently requires a hip operation at an orthopaedic clinic in Munich. This will cost LVL 15,810.65.
Ernests (3)
Ernests was born healthy and at first developed in accordance with textbook principles. At the age of 15 months, however, the toddler suffered a serious case of meningitis with side-effects that included very serious brain damage. Upon returning from hospital, Ernests could not move, he could not focus his gaze, he was fed by tube, and he suffered periods of cramps. Medical treatment has helped. Ernests is learning to move around, and he has learned to feed himself. The little boy needs stem cell therapy at a German clinic, the “XCell Centre.” This will cost LVL 6,394.50.
Aleksandrs (5)
At the age of 9 months, Aleksandrs was found to have sensorineural hearing problems. He lived in absolute silence. An implant was installed for Aleksandrs at the age of 18 months. After a long period of difficult treatment, the first results have been achieved. Before Aleksandrs can communicate with others, however, he requires 2.5 months of treatment at a centre in St Petersburg for children with speech and hearing disorders. Aleksandrs needs LVL 3,000 to hear.
Timofejs (3)
Timofejs was born prematurely, and he weighed only one kilogram (2.2 pounds) at birth. Timofejs suffers from retinopathy of prematurity, and he has had several operations to save his eyes as such. Right now Timofejs can only see very bright light, and he uses his sense of touch and voice to move around in life. Timofejs requires two eye operations at a clinic in St Petersburg in 2011 to recover his eyesight. That will cost LVL 2,550.
The purpose of this project of kindness is to improve the quality of life of these terribly sick children, helping them to live lives that are as full as possible. The donations will cover treatment and rehabilitation that is not covered by the national budget and its subsidies, which is why public participation and support are so critically important.
On Goodness Day this year, May 29, LNT TV, the Ziedot.lv portal and the Swedbank bank invite everyone to take part in Goodness Day events all day long at the Hall of Congresses in Kronvalds Park.
You can donate to help these children on the Ziedot.lv portal, by ringing the kindness phone number 9000-6383 (LVL 1), or by donating money via donation boxes at Swedbank, Rimi and Supernetto all around Latvia. Donate and receive your own Goodness Heart!
The Project is placed online on: 03.05.2011
Project completed 08.06.2011
