Kaspars is an active and joyful boy of two-years who has started to attend a kindergarten. The boy is very willing to play, to act together with other children and to dance, as well as to help his dad and mom to do housework.
Kaspars has congenital bone pathologies in his right leg, thus the boy has used to the fact since his birth that one leg is severely shorter than another. At this moment the difference in length of his legs is approximately 12 centimetres and it makes it very difficult for Kaspars to walk.
The diagnosis is congenital defect of thighbone and shin, severe foot deformation, severely shortened leg – thigh and shin, hip dysplasia, knee flexion contracture.
In the future, at the age of four and five years, surgeries are planned for Kaspars in Germany, and for a time period until these surgeries it is necessary to ensure manufacture of professional orthopaedic prostheses which would facilitate both, better result of surgeries and the possibility for the child to move without a wheelchair in the future.
The family has turned to both, the specialists of Latvia and Germany, however, the medical treatment institution for the manufacture of orthopaedic prostheses has been selected in Germany, because there is a lack of knowledge, experience and technologies to manufacture the necessary orthopaedic prostheses in Latvia. The first orthopaedic prosthesis has been already made in Germany; the boy is using it every day.
The cost of orthopaedic prosthesis was EUR 4 342.37 in total. Vaivari Technical Aids Centre covered EUR 2 500 of the total amount. The rest of the total expenses was covered by the family from their own funds.
In August of this year Kaspars will need next orthopaedic prostheses for walking and orthoses for sleeping. This service is very expensive and the family has no such funds to cover these high costs by their own resources.
The orthopaedic prostheses for walking and orthoses for sleeping until the performance of surgeries will cost EUR 36 000 in total. This amount includes also expenditure related to repair of orthopaedic prostheses, their adjustment according to the child’s growing needs, physician’s consultations and accommodation costs.
