Ieva Račko from Riga, 56, has been known to her colleagues and friends as optimistic and active woman. Ieva has obtained a higher education and for 15 years she has worked at the University of Latvia, participating in projects and editing texts. She has been a widow already for 23 years - after her husband's death she has no other family. In her free time, Ieva enjoyed skiing, orienteering and Geocaching. But all this is now postponed indefinitely.
Already for 3 years Ieva fights a severe disease - malignant skin cancer, melanoma. After surgery and immunotherapy, which did not yield the hoped-for improvement, two more operations took place that did not stop the spread of malignant cells.
Ieva does not give up. A hope has emerged to defeat the disease yet. The council of doctors has prescribed the use of Vemurafenib - a special medication devised in Switzerland to combat the particular mutation of melanoma that Ieva has been diagnosed with. However, the medication is very expensive. The Swiss pharmaceutical company ROCHE provided EUR 56 281.44 support for 24 Vemurafenib packages. The state has allocated 14 228.72 euro or 508.17 euro for each package of medication. Nevertheless, Ieva herself has to pay 1836.89 euro per one package, and her treatment requires altogether 28 packages - a total amount of 51 432.96 euro. Ieva for herself is capable to afford almost 2 treatment courses, still, she has no means to afford the full required treatment. Ieva sincerely appeals for our assistance to achieve a victory over the relentless illness. It requires 48 430 euro.
