Two faithful eyes still believe in man. Someone once domesticated this dog and let him believe… The shelter Dzīvnieku draugs helps eliminate the suffering of animals and the cruelty towards them; they take care of abandoned animals that are in trouble.
By donating to the Animal Shelter Dzīvnieku draugs, food, medicine and shelter is provided for the little friends of man – for dogs and cats. For hundreds of dogs, animal shelters can become their only and final chance.
Project foresees the following activities:
- Pet food – the shelter requires several tens of kilos of food every day.
- Vaccines, medicine and veterinary care – all animals in the shelter are medically examined, vaccinated and sterilised. Quite often the animals found are so weak that they require special care or even treatment for injuries.
- Euthanasia of sick animals – the chances of saving an animal’s life are always carefully evaluated; however there are cases when the animal simply has to be put to sleep. Euthanasia is performed in a humane manner and is painless.
- Search for the owners – the current owners of the shelter dogs and cats are searched for (advertisements, searching after badges), but if they do not turn up for a longer period of time and the dog is healthy, then the employees of the shelter search for new owners and a residence for the animals. The employees of the shelter have the right to check whether the potential owners are able to take care of the animal, as well as to provide advice about the care of the animal to be adopted. Dogs and cats can be received free of charge or for a donation.
- Facilitation of the shelter – the donated funds will be used for the construction of new cages, for expanding the walkabout square and for purchasing freezers for food storage.
- Educational programmes – created especially for children and young people, to provide an understanding about the nature of animals and people’s responsibility for them.
Project implementer: The foundation Dzīvnieku draugs and the animal shelter Dzīvnieku draugs. In one year the shelter spends more than LVL 70 000, which are mainly received in donations and granted by international organisations for animal protection. More information about the organisation is available at www.dzd.lv
What will be achieved by this project?
Within the framework of the project, humane treatment will be provided to the pets that have been domesticated by humans, but have been left one day without any care. As the result of project implementation, the number of stray animals will be decreased and the owners of the pets that have been lost will be given a chance and the hope to find their pet at the shelter, where it will have received appropriate care.
