All men can develop prostate cancer and other male diseases, especially after 40 years of age. Many don’t even suspect that they have developed the first stage of cancer, because at first they have no complaints. They feel good, so they don’t seem to have a reason to visit a doctor.
In 2015 a man died every day from untreated prostate cancer in Latvia - 392 members of the male sex. In our country more than 1000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed every year, however in the past 10 years almost 4000 men have already died from prostate cancer. Most cases are specifically in rural regions, where there is limited access to doctors, and also financial resources possibly do not allow for beginning a successful treatment course.
Every year in Latvia and throughout the world the month of November brings special awareness to men’s health. In November the “Movember” (from the word “moustache” - and “November”) men’s health campaign is held. During the whole month problems related to men’s health are brought forward, information on treatment possibilities is made available, and men are urged to undergo preventative health screenings. Symbolically, during “Movember” or “Moustache month”, men grow out their moustaches for the entire month to bring additional men’s awareness to their own health.
The “Male Patient Society” foundation in cooperation with the Latvian Association of Rural Family Doctors (LLGAA) developed the “Movember” fund. The goal is to provide necessary medical assistance to all men in the regions of Latvia, who can’t afford it themselves for various reasons.
Latvia’s strength is healthy and strong men, which is why with their donation, anyone can help a man in Latvia, who could otherwise not afford to do so, pay for a visit to a urologist. This gives them the opportunity to live a long and fulfilled life, because nowadays even prostate cancer is a curable disease. In cooperation with the LLGAA patients will be determined who require urgent medical assistance to improve their health, and who cannot financially afford it themselves.
