There are hundreds of elderly people in Latvia who are in a bad financial position – after covering rent and utility payments and purchasing medicine, not much is left for survival. Then, support is very important, however small the amount.
The Kristaps Upelnieks Foundation is taking care of more than 100 elderly, lonely people or disabled people who are supported by small material benefits (about LVL 15 per month) for food, as well as by single benefits for urgent needs, completely or partially covering prescription medicine (up to LVL 40 per month), dental and ophthalmology services and sometimes even hospital bills. The elderly can also receive a single benefit for firewood purchase (about LVL 30 per year).
The volunteers of the foundation visit the elderly at their homes and are sometimes their only guests. The support cannot be measured only in money. The elderly often feel rejected, abandoned, worthless, but then a few good words, a visit, a small present, a sack of potatoes for winter are the things that save these people from depression and despair.
The Kristaps Upelnieks Foundation takes care of more than 100 people from Riga, the Talsi district and Latgale. About LVL 2 000 – 5 000 are donated for support per month. The more money that is donated, the more people there are who could receive support.
Let’s not leave our elderly lonely and in need! Let’s help them spend their old age respectably and let’s help with our donations!
What will be achieved by this project? Donating at least LVL 25, at least one lonely and disadvantaged elderly person will receive monthly support for purchasing food and medicine.
Project implementer: the Kristaps Upelnieks Foundation started its operation in Latvia in 1991 on the initiative of United States resident Lauma Upelnieks-Katis and with her personal funds. The foundation was established in honour of General Kurelis’ Chief-of-Staff Captain Kristaps Upelnieks, who was shot on 20 November 1944. Up to now the Foundation received the donations for the support to old people from foreign Latvians and their organisations.
