Normunds is 39 years old. For 14 years he has suffered from one of the most aggressive forms of blood cancer: acute lymphocytic leukemia. Living for 14 years with this diagnosis is surprisingly long, thanks to vitality of Normunds, support of his family, perseverance and positivity as well as the opportunity to take a treatment at some of the best haematologists in Europe at the hospital of the University of Hamburg.
In 2004, Normunds had the opportunity to perform the bone marrow transplantation in Hamburg with state support and the illness receded for 12 years. This was the happiest time in Normund's life: he established family, there were born 2 children. At the moment Olivia is 7 years old, Matīss - 4 years old. Children are the greatest happiness in Normund's life, and he is very keen to see how they are growing, he wants to teach children all the skills and knowledge they need in life and to raise psychologically strong children, which, according to Normunds, can only be done by both parents together. Normunds was socially active during these years and quickly returned to his workplace after the treatment. He worked as an ecologist in a large Latvian manufacturing company. Sports, nature, travel were are his passion, but above all he loves taking care of his family.
Unfortunately, Normund's life is at present threatened. A year ago the disease returned with renewed vigor. A second bone marrow transplant was performed in Hamburg. This time even the best medical procedures did not help - leukemia was that aggressive and quick that it was not even possible to get the results of the analyzes in such a short time. Doctors predicted that he will live just a few weeks if a specific medicine will not be used.
According to the doctors in Hamburg the only drug which can stop the attack of the disease is the drug Ponatinib, which is currently the latest achievement in the world against this specific type of diagnosis. In many countries this medicine is available through the public funds. Normunds has appealed to the Latvian National Health Service with a request to support his treatment at the German Clinic, including receiving a medication, but there is still no positive solution.
Although the price of medication for one month is € 6,693.73, thanks to financial support from family and friends, Normunds was provided with it. And most importantly - the medicine helps! After two weeks Normunds recovered, began to feel better, and the analysis no longer showed cancerous cells in the blood.
Unfortunately Normund’s family can not afford to buy medicines every month. The drug should be used for at least a year, costing 80 324.76 euros. Please, help Normunds!
