Reinis is fully determined to make his first steps some day!...
...despite the fact that doctors diagnosed him at the age of nine months with a rare genetic disease – spinal muscle atrophy – the main symptom of which is overall muscle weakness, which progresses until the child dies. The only way of improving the child’s physical health is through medical rehabilitation.
Most often, children who suffer from such diseases do not live longer than their second birthday. However, to the joy of his parents, at the age of six Reinis can be proud of his first victories, achieved by hard and persistent work – with a little help, he can stand on his knees, his muscle tone has increased a lot; his back muscles are developing, despite the prognosis of the doctors. The newest achievement is Reinis’ ability to stand in a crawling position. Much work is still ahead for Reinis to learn to get into positions on his own, which will some day also help him walk – sitting, crawling and getting up. Reinis’ daily life differs from that of his friends. He no longer asks the question: “Why?” Reinis understands: I have a great challenge ahead in life – to become as strong as Superman!
To improve his health, rehabilitation is necessary at the International Clinic of Rehabilitation in Truskavets, in the dolphinarium at Yevpatoria, as well as in the Vaivari rehabilitation centre. It would be very important to visit a specialised clinic in New York (US).
