One person needs at least EUR 300 in month to provide itself with all required goods and services. For food, nearly EUR 85 for one person in month are spent. More than 28% of all employed receive the minimal salary. After payment of taxes, the income does not exceed the national minimum living wage in amount of EUR 252 for one family member (source: the Central Bureau of Statistics). Due to the inelastic bureaucratic system, some of such families cannot receive the status of poor or low-income families that might improve their miserable financial condition.
However, they are hard-working families, which carry on doing low-paid work and paying taxes despite of their low income. To help the ones, who are short in finances for everyday living, the Samaritan Association of Latvia in cooperation with Ziedot.lv asks the nearest ones to open their hearts. The Food Bank “Paēdušai Latvijai” (“For a Fed Latvia”) raises funds for handing out of food packages for persons in need. Expenditure of one food package does not exceed EUR 8. It includes products that provide families with possibility to ensure themselves with wholesome everyday meal. The food package contains 12 products: wheat flour, manna, sugar, pasta, broken peas, and meal of barley, oatmeal, chicken bouillon, margarine, rice, canned stewed pork, and oil.
In prior, food packages are handed out to families with children with low income, for which the Social Service has not and cannot allocate the status of poor or low-income families.
As much as possible, the help is provided to pensioners and disabled persons with low income, for which the Social Service does not allocate the status of poor or low-income person. In cooperation with other regional charity organisations and Social Services of local authorities, the help is provided all over Latvia. Each applicant for help will be assessed to make sure that the support is provided to the ones who need it the most.
The project of the Food Bank “Paēdušai Latvijai” (“For a Fed Latvia”) is being implemented by the Samaritan Association of Latvia with the charity portal Ziedot.lv and charity organisations all over Latvia thanks to support of the state stock company VAS „Latvijas Valsts meži”, Soros Fund Latvia, store chain „Maxima”, and stock company AS „Latvijas Finieris”.
