On 12 September, the reunion of the dogs adopted from the shelter took place in the yard of the shelter Dzīvnieku draugs, located on Fr. Candera Street 4 – it was a real dog party! To celebrate World Animal Day (4 October) for the fourth year, the foundation Dzīvnieku draugs organised an event gathering the owners and their dogs that had been adopted from the shelter within the last year. In 2003, 309 dogs were adopted from the shelter, in 2004 – 341 dogs, in 2005 – 364 dogs, in 2006 – 349 dogs, in 2007 – 357 dogs, in 2008 – 278 dogs and now, in 2009, up to 193 dogs. People currently chose dogs not only according to a special breed with good pedigree, but are also willing to help those that have ended up at the shelter.

On 17 September 2009, the foundation Dzīvnieku draugs organised a protest at the Saeima building on Jēkaba Street 11, to protest the draft bill amendments to the Animal Protection Law, which permits killing livestock according to traditional meat production ritual methods of the religious communities – the quick cutting of the throat using a very sharp knife of an animal at full consciousness, cutting the frontal part of the neck (carotid artery), without affecting the vital organs – heart, brain and spinal cord, and then letting the animal bleed to death. At the protest, we also invited people to protest the procedure, in which the Saeima of Latvia passes the publicly important laws – secretly, in haste and without public debate.

THE HAPPY STORIES OF SEPTEMBER

The dog Ronija  was spotted on the evening of September 7 by a woman in Bolderāja next to the ATM. At first the woman did not think that the dog had been abandoned on purpose. In the morning the poor dog was still there... The police were called, who then took the dog to the shelter. Ronija was very frightened and was gently leaning against people’s legs. It is hard to believe that such a sweet, young dog could be abandoned. Ronija spent only three weeks at the shelter. She took the fancy of a new owner from Ulbroka. Now she can live inside and outside and run freely around the yard of a private home.

At the end of August, the dog Zeta was running around the streets of Riga and wandered into the building of the Saeima. She was probably in search of a new owner. Zeta was a well cared for, sterilised dog with an injured leg. Advertisements were published in Internet portals, but, unfortunately, her owners did not show up. A month later, this happy dog went to her new home in Ķekava, where a large family was already waiting for her, especially their son, who is Zeta’s best friend.

Trezors. At the beginning of September, a nice, small-sized dog wandered in the territory of the shelter; he wanted to be friends with everyone. Two weeks passed and Trezors was not searched for by anybody. Here he received a bath, was deflead, dewormed and vaccinated. Three weeks later, Trezors was adopted by a girl from abroad and now lives with her on Valdemāra Street. Now Trezors is an English “speaking” Riga city boy.

The little kitten Feta was found at the Stradiņš Hospital car park with infected eyes and a running nose. Feta was about two months old. The kitten stayed at the clinic for treatment. Three weeks later… she was an extremely sweet girl. Not even a week had passed when a young man walked into the shelter looking especially for Feta because he had chosen her at the home page of the shelter. Now almost a month has passed since the little kitten has begun a new life. Now she is master of a private home in Katlakalns.

The kitten Romeo arrived at the shelter together with his sister Džuljeta at the age of one and a half months. His sister welcomed her new owner two months later, but Romeo remained alone and spent another two months at the shelter. The kitten was very social and friendly. On 30 October, the happy hour came for Romeo, because a person came to the shelter looking to adopt a male cat “with personality”. This surely was Romeo. Now our kitten is living in a private home and is happy together with his new owner.

The dog Monika arrived at the shelter as a tiny puppy, at about the age of two months. She had been found in a stairwell. Monika was very pretty, with fluffy ears, a long nose, but nobody was willing to adopt her. It seems that sometimes you just have to wait for the right moment a little longer. On 11 September, Monika at last took the fancy of a new owner from Jēkabpils district. Monika also looked happy to finally be going home – something that she had long since wished for since.
